RENO, Nev. – Danny Unterbrink of Lake Ozark, Missouri, has reached a remarkable milestone in the sport of bowling, making his 50th consecutive appearance at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships – one of the most prestigious and enduring events in competitive bowling.
The achievement reflects more than five decades of dedication, consistency and passion for the sport. To commemorate the occasion, Unterbrink was joined by his family for a ceremonial walk down the center aisle at the National Bowling Stadium, where he received a standing ovation from fellow competitors and spectators and was presented with a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin.
Unterbrink’s journey began in 1976 in Oklahoma City. Since then, he has traveled across the country each year to compete, building a legacy defined by longevity and perseverance.
Among the many host cities he has visited, Billings, Montana, in 2002 remains one of his favorites.
“I didn’t think that Billings was going to be much fun, but it was,” Unterbrink said.
Over the course of his Open Championships career, Unterbrink has knocked down 78,543 pins while maintaining a 174.5 average, an impressive testament to both his endurance and consistency on the lanes.
Unterbrink also recalls a memorable lesson from his second Open Championships appearance in 1977 in Reno, Nevada, when he bowled alongside two competitors celebrating their own 50-year milestones and faced one of them in brackets.
“I thought this should be no problem, and then he beat me,” Unterbrink said. “I learned to never underestimate someone again.”
The Open Championships is celebrating its 122nd edition in 2026 and making its 15th trip to Reno, Nevada. The 2026 event is scheduled to feature more than 55,000 bowlers and 11,000 five-player teams competing across 128 consecutive days at the National Bowling Stadium.
